Insiders evening with Dómhnal Slattery

The Consulate General of Ireland in Hong Kong works closely with the Irish Chamber of Commerce of Hong Kong to promote stronger business links with Ireland. As part of an ongoing 'Insiders' Series, the Consulate and Chamber are collaborating on a special event with Dómhnal Slattery, Founder & Chief Executive of Avolon, a global business leader in the transportation leasing industry.

Dómhnal Slattery (49) has 27 years’ experience in the aircraft leasing industry and has a proven and unique track record in establishing and scaling industry leading lessor businesses. The ability to build and rapidly scale a market-leading aircraft leasing platform is evident in his successful establishment of IAMG, RBS Aviation Capital and Avolon through three business cycles – from the early 1990’s to today.

At Royal Bank of Scotland Group plc, Dómhnal established the bank’s aircraft operating lease business, RBS Aviation Capital, to become the world’s third largest aircraft finance platform. More recently, the success of Avolon is significant given the nature and quality of the investors who supported the business at formation; and, the ability to build a business of scale in what is now an established, competitive global industry and the primary source of fleet financing for the world’s airlines. Following 5 years in private ownership, Avolon listed on the New York Stock Exchange in December 2014 in what was the largest ever listing on the NYSE by an Irish founded company. Less than 9 months after listing, Avolon announced an agreement to be acquired by Bohai Leasing for US$7.6 billion, a transaction which completed in January 2016.

Bohai Leasing is a global leader in transportation (container and aircraft) leasing and the only listed leasing company on the Chinese A-Share stock market. Bohai is majority owned by HNA Group, a Fortune 500 company with global interests in a range of sectors including aviation, leasing, logistics, tourism and transportation.

Dómhnal holds a Bachelor of Commerce from University College Galway and is a graduate of the Accelerated Development Programme from the London Business School. In 2015, Dómhnal was honoured by NUI Galway at the University Foundation’s Annual New York Gala Dinner for his achievements in global business leadership. Previous honourees include former US President, Bill Clinton and Irish Actor and Cultural Ambassador, Gabriel Byrne.

This event, the third in the series, will provide an excellent opportunity for Chamber members & 'Friends of Ireland' in Hong Kong to hear directly from Dómhnal, a global business leader in the transportation leasing industry who has a foot in both Ireland and China.
