Ireland-Argentina Relations

The Embassy plays an important role in fostering the political relationship between Ireland and Argentina and with the other countries to which we have accreditation.

Ireland and Argentina enjoy a longstanding and warm relationship, aided by the presence of our Embassy in Buenos Aires since 1949.

These links go back to the very foundation of the State, when Lawrence Ginnell TD was sent to Argentina by Eamon de Valera in 1920 to seek support amongst the Irish community in Argentina following the War of Independence.

President Michael D Higgins became the third Irish President in succession to visit Argentina when he arrived in 2012, displaying the warmth of the friendship between the two countries. President Higgins also visited Chile on that occasion.

Within the United Nations system, Ireland and Argentina share a similar vision of how best to address some of the most pressing global challenges, most notably in the fields of human rights and disarmament and non-proliferation.

Naturally, there is a strong connection between our Naval Services based on the role Admiral William Brown played in securing Argentine independence.

The Embassy also supports local initiatives which seek to raise awareness of this historic connections between Ireland and Argentina based on the emigration experience.
