The relationship between Ireland and Austria has deep roots in history that have remained vibrant down to the present day. In the 12th century Irish monks founded the Schottenstift abbey in Vienna, which remains a prominent part of the centre of the city. Later on, Austria gave refuge to a number of the “Wild Geese”, and names like Taafe, O’Donnell, Lacy, Browne, Kavanagh and Laudon have their place in Austrian political and military history. We have shared literary links, from Wittgenstein in Dublin to Oliver St John Gogarty’s time here in Vienna.
Today the Irish influence continues to flourish, which is also reflected in the diverse and active community. In fact, our culture is very much alive in Austria through the thriving Irish music and dance scene, regular exhibitions by contemporary artists, the Vienna Gaels Gaelic football club which brings the Irish sporting ethos into the heart of Vienna, and not least through the University of Vienna’s Centre for Irish Studies, the largest such centre in the German speaking world. I will look to build on this both in Vienna, and across the country to ensure that Irish culture continues to find a home here in Austria.
Our bilateral historical ties have been immeasurably strengthened by our common membership of the European Union and the Eurozone. Trade has continued to increase with figures in 2019 showing that Ireland exported over €425 million in goods and over €1 billion in services to Austria. Together with Enterprise Ireland, Bord Bia and the IDA, we at the Embassy plan to increase our focus on growing the economic links with Austria during my time here. In addition, tourism numbers between our two countries continue to increase. Last year over 80,0000 tourists travelled from Austria to Ireland and about 60,000 came the other way. Tourism Ireland has a strong presence in Austria and we will continue to promote Ireland as a destination.
This is my second Ambassadorial posting in Vienna, as I served as Ambassador to the OSCE from 2007 to 2013 and I look forward to representing Ireland at the many and diverse international organisations in Vienna. In this Ireland shares great similarities with Austria. Our shared values are evident in terms, for example, of our support for multilateralism, our commitment to the peaceful resolution of conflicts, and our record of involvement in UN peacekeeping missions.
Finally, my wife Anne and I look forward to experiencing Austrian culture while I am here, from the opera and museums of Vienna, to the lakes of Salzburg, and the mountains of Tirol.

Irland und Österreich verbindet eine Beziehung, die ihre Wurzeln tief in der Vergangenheit hat und dennoch bis zum heutigen Tag lebendig geblieben ist. Im 12. Jahrhundert gründeten irische Mönche das Schottenstift in Wien, bis heute ein markanter Teil des Stadtzentrums. Später wurde Österreich zur Zuflucht für die „Wildgänse“ und Namen wie O’Donnell, Lacy, Browne, Kavanagh und Laudon fanden Eingang in die politische und Militärgeschichte Österreichs. Auch in der Literatur gibt es Gemeinsamkeiten, von Wittgensteins Zeit in Dublin bis zu Oliver St John Gogartys Zeit hier in Wien.
Heute blüht der irische Einfluss weiter, welches sich auch in der vielfältigen und aktiven Community widerspiegelt. Unsere Kultur ist in Österreich durch die florierende irische Musik- und Tanzszene, regelmäßige Ausstellungen zeitgenössischer Künstler, des „Vienna Gaels Gaelic Football Club“, der irisches Sportethos im Herzen Wiens vertritt, und nicht zuletzt durch das Zentrum für Irische Studien der Universität Wien, das größte derartige Zentrum im deutschsprachigen Raum, sehr lebendig. Ich freue mich, sowohl in Wien als auch in den Bundesländern darauf aufzubauen, um sicherzustellen, dass die irische Kultur weiterhin eine Heimat hier in Österreich findet.
Unsere historisch gewachsenen bilateralen Beziehungen wurden durch unsere gemeinsame Mitgliedschaft in der EU und der Eurozone immens gestärkt. Unser Handel ist kontinuierlich gestiegen; 2019 exportierte Irland über €425 Millionen in Gütern und über €1 Milliarde in Dienstleistungen nach Österreich. In Zusammenarbeit mit „Enterprise Ireland“, dem Irish Food Board „Bord Bia“ und der irischen Wirtschaftsförderungsagentur IDA plant die Botschaft, während meiner Zeit hier in Österreich einen Fokus auf die Verbesserung der wirtschaftlichen Beziehungen zu setzen. Zusätzlich wächst auch der Tourismus zwischen unseren Ländern. Letztes Jahr reisten mehr als 80.000 Touristen aus Österreich nach Irland und etwa 60.000 reisten in die andere Richtung. „Tourism Ireland“ ist in Österreich stark präsent und wird weiterhin daran arbeiten, Irland als Reiseziel zu bewerben.
Dies ist mein zweiter Botschafterposten in Wien, nachdem ich bereits von 2007 bis 2013 als Botschafter bei der OSZE dieses Privileg ausüben durfte, und ich freue mich darauf, Irland bei den vielen verschiedenen Internationalen Organisationen hier in Wien zu vertreten. Irland und Österreich haben auch hier viele Gemeinsamkeiten. Unsere gemeinsamen Werte werden zum Beispiel an unserer Unterstützung für Multilateralismus sichtbar, unserem Engagement für die friedliche Beilegung von Konflikten, und unserem Beitrag zu UNO Friedensmissionen.
Und letztlich freuen sich meine Frau Anne und ich darauf, während meiner Zeit in Österreich seine Kultur zu erleben, angefangen bei der Oper und den Museen in Wien, bis zu den Salzburger Seen und der Tiroler Bergwelt.
