Ireland-Ethiopia Relations
Ireland established diplomatic relations with Ethiopia in 1994, the same year it opened its Embassy in Addis Ababa. Since then both the Irish and Ethiopian economies have grown significantly, trade, tourism, education and investment links between the two countries have increased and the Irish Aid programme has continued to develop to support a wide range of partners working in health, nutrition, governance, social protection, resilience and humanitarian assistance.
In 2014 the President of Ireland, Michael D. Higgins, paid a visit to Ethiopia, and in 2017 Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs, Simon Coveney, visited Addis Ababa. There has also been a wide range of people-to-people contact between Ethiopian and Irish citizens, through tourism, education and cultural exchanges, business links and volunteering.
