Casement and Calabar: A Century of Lessons
To commemorate Roger Casement’s time in Old Calabar (1891-1894), and his humanitarian legacy, the Embassy plans to convene an event on best practices in corporate governance. This will remember the positive legacy of one of Ireland’s greatest humanitarians and will imagine a better future for the Niger Delta.
The theme ‘a century of lessons’ draws on the interactions between international companies and indigenous peoples and recalls Casements time in the area, as well as his later more high profile humanitarianism. It resonates with issues arising from the activity of international oil companies in the Delta as well as with Irish policy on responsible investment and the National Plan on Business and Human Rights currently being developed.
