Tánaiste launches 3rd National Action Plan on Women, Peace & Security

28 June 2019On 21 June Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade Simon Coveney T.D. formally launched Ireland's Third National Action Plan for the Implementation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 and related resolutions (the Women, Peace and Security Agenda). Expressions of interest for membership of the Oversight Group for the Plan are now being sought.
On Friday 21 June 2019 Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Simon Coveney T.D., Minister of State with Responsibility for Defence, Paul Kehoe T.D., Vice Admiral Mark Mellett, DSM, Chief of Staff of the Defence Forces, and Salome Mbugua, Independent Chair of the Working Group for the Development of the National Action Plan on Women, Peace and Security launched Ireland’s third National Action Plan on Women, Peace and Security.
The Plan will run from 2019 to 2024 and is a renewal of the Government’s commitment to the Women, Peace and Security Agenda of the United Nations. This agenda focuses on the negative impact of conflict on women and girls and on the importance of women’s participation in decision-making in conflict and post-conflict situations.
In his address, the Tánaiste stated, “Ireland is committed to putting women and girls at the heart of our work to prevent and resolve conflict. Ensuring that peace is forged on the basis of rights, equality and inclusion is an expression of Ireland’s values and our interests.”

Oversight Group: expressions of interest sought
Implementation of the Plan will be monitored by an Oversight Group appointed by the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade. It is envisaged that this Group will consist of civil society, academia, and statutory representatives.
Expressions of interest in membership of the Group are now being sought from:
- Experts from relevant civil society organisations with experience and perspectives relevant to achieving the objectives of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 and related resolutions, including working with or representing: women, men, and boys affected by conflict in Ireland and internationally, migrant women affected by conflict, and women who have experienced conflict-related gender-based violence, and,
- Academics and other independent experts based in Ireland with demonstrable relevant experience of women, peace, and security.
