St Patrick’s Day Greenings 2021

St Patrick’s Day Greenings 2021

A wave of greenings went from Košice to Bratislava, a visual sign of Irish-Slovak friendship. Despite the pandemic, St Patrick’s Day celebrations took place in the form of “greened” landmarks breaking several Slovak records. For the first time, an incredible 16 buildings in 9 towns around the country went green, including the beautiful UNESCO sites in Bardejov and Spiš. The Spiš area has been home to Irish nuns for over two decades, and therefore “greening” Spiš Castle shows how deeply rooted the Irish diaspora is in this part of Slovakia.

Furthermore, an extremely important and historically significant location in Slovak history, the Museum of the Slovak National Uprising, turned green. Several theatres and concert halls also turned green, and let us hope that they will host some Irish art soon. Last, but not least, Irish business joined as well by “greening” ecorec, a CRH waste processing plant in Pezinok. CRH is the largest Irish employer in Slovakia and ecorec is a major contributor to a more sustainable future.
