Annual discussion on the integration of a gender perspective throughout the work of the HRC - Statement by Ireland

Human Rights Council 33rd Session (13 September – 30 September 2016)

Annual discussion on the integration of a gender perspective throughout the work of the HRC and that of its mechanisms.

Statement by Ireland

26 September 2016

Thank you, Mr President,

Ireland aligns itself with the statement of the European Union.  We thank the panellists for their valuable insights on the integration of a gender perspective into the work of the Human Rights Council.

A year ago today, the international community came together to adopt the 2030 Agenda. This landmark agreement enabled the international community to reaffirm its commitment to charting a course towards a more sustainable, prosperous and peaceful future for all.

The adoption of Goal 5 rightly reflects the inextricable link between gender equality, women’s empowerment and sustainable development.  Ireland believes that this Council can make an important contribution to the delivery of this Goal.

On a national level, we are working to mainstream gender across all of our foreign policy priorities including disarmament and peacekeeping, as well as the implementation of the women, peace and security agenda.  Through our development cooperation programme we offer support to organisations who are working to make gender equality a reality on the ground.

Ireland welcomes the regular discussions at this Council on integrating a gender perspective in its deliberations and the implementation of its decisions.  This is an essential part of our response to existing and emerging human rights situations of concern as well as contributing to efforts to address this issue across the broader UN system and its response to global issues such as migration, climate change and conflict.

Addressing gender-related issues is one of the priorities of our engagement in the sessions of the UPR.

We would therefore be interested in the views of the panellists as to how we can better integrate a gender perspective into the UPR as we prepare for the beginning of the third cycle next year.

Thank you.
