President Higgins' historic State Visit to the UK

Pictured is President of Ireland Michael D Higgins and his wife Sabina with Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and The Duke of Edinburgh at the 'Welcome Ceremony' in Windsor Castle on the first official day of the Presidents 5 day State Visit to the United Kingdom.

The first State visit by an Irish Head of State to the United Kingdom took place in April 2014

The Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Eamon Gilmore, T.D., accompanied the President and Sabina Higgins on the State Visit to the United Kingdom from the 8th to 11th April 2014.

The State Visit was an opportunity to reflect on the strength and depth of our relationship with our closest neighbour.

More than anything else, the visit gave us an opportunity to celebrate the many connections between Britain and Ireland. Our political relationship, our economic partnership and our cultural connections are stronger than ever, and are underpinned by a thriving and vibrant Irish community.

Ireland and Britain are more connected than you think.
